The Essix retainer is a transparent removable retainer that fits over the entire arch of teeth. Similar to Invisalign® trays, Essix retainers have no wires. They are inexpensive and easier to wear. They can be used for other treatments as well, including tooth movement and bridges.
Instruction for Essix Retainers
WHAT TO DO:
- Clean your retainer with cold water and a soft toothbrush. It is best not to use toothpaste, as the retainers will become scratched.
- If there is a bad odor, they can be soaked in Listerine mouth wash (30 minutes) or “Retainer Brite” cleaner.
- When not being worn please keep safe in the retainer container that is supplied.
- Clean the inside of your retainer case with soapy water.
- Keep away from pets and small children – they will eat them.
- Keep away from heat-such as hot water, direct sunlight, radiators – they will distort.
- Inform us immediately if the retainers are lost or damaged.
- Bring retainers to all follow-up appointments.
WHAT NOT TO DO:
- Do not clean your retainer using denture cleaners or bleach.
- Do not clean your retainer with hot water – they will shrink!
- Do not leave it on the table or wrap it in a napkin when eating – they get thrown out!
- Do not put it in your pocket without being in a container – they can be easily damaged.
Retainer wear is as important as the orthodontic treatment itself. If retainers are not worn, teeth will move. If you are having trouble speaking while wearing your retainer, just practice! Read aloud, talk on the phone or sing along to the radio to get used to your retainers! Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far!
